The Old KL Railway Station

The Old Kuala Lumpur Railway Station

Old KL Railway Station Displaying Mughal Architecture

Only a short walk from the mosque is the old Kuala Lumpur Railway Station, completed in 1911 and now replaced by the newer KL Sentral Station nearby.  Commuter trains still stop at the old station, but the last real train rolled through in 2001.  The distinctive Mughal architecture (the Mughal style of India) is definitely worth a peek.  Several museums, such as the National Museum and the Islamic Arts Museum, are located nearby rounding out the important tourist attractions in this section of the city.

Heritage Building of Kuala Lumpur – the Old Kuala Lumpur Railway Station

One of the most prominent landmarks of Kuala Lumpur in yesteryear apart from the Sultan Abdul Samad Building must be the old Kuala Lumpur Railway Station whose function has now been replaced by the new and modern KL Sentral since 2001.

The old Kuala Lumpur Railway Station was designed by AB Hubback with significant Mughal architectural style. The same architectural style was also applied to the KTM Headquarters located across the road, the Sultan Abdul Samad Building and the Masjid Jamek (it was also designed by AB Hubback). In other words it was the contemporary architectural style at that time.

This majestic railway station complex was completed at a cost of 23,000 dollars and began its operation on 1 August 1910.

Mughal architecture is one of the exotic revival architectural styles that was adopted by architects of Europe and America in the wake of the Romanticist fascination with everything oriental. It is a mix of Islamic, Persian and Indian influence.

Kuala Lumpur Train Station very for cheap and easy travel

The station comprises of one main terminal building and three platforms that serve four railway tracks. The terminal building is where the main hall, ticket counters and offices are located.

On the north wing, a 3 storey addition was added during the early stages of its operation. This part of the building features colonial era designs with arches of different sizes and surrounding verandahs. As opposed to most exposed brickwork buildings of the same era, the facade of the Kuala Lumpur train station is fully plastered.

The three platforms are covered corrugated roof sheets propped up by heavy steel girders frames. Parts of the roof were originally exposed to allow for the exhaust smoke of the steam locomotives to ventilate.

The platforms are linked together with the main terminal building through two underground passageways. The side of the platforms opposite the main building is surrounded by a wall that is in the same style as the main terminal building.

1n 1986, the station underwent a refurbishment giving the building a more modern look making the station look more like the Dayabumi Complex rather than its riginal “Maharaja styled” theme. An elevated walkway was also added to the station during the renovation allowing it to be connected to the Dayaumi complex located nearby.

Today, since the KTM Train Company shifted their operation center to the KL Sentral railway station, the Kuala Lumpur railway station has dwindled in importance. Nevertheless, the station is still in use serving as one of the stops for the KTM Komuter train that travel around Kuala Lumpur’s districts. It also serves as a bus station for the NICE Executive Coach and Plusliner Economy Express that runs between Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia.

Berjaya Times Sq's Grand Musical Staircase Preview!

Leave it to Berjaya Times Square to make walking up a flight of stairs a whole lot more fun. In the past years, the mall had been researching for ways to accommodate the growing traffic between the ground floor and lower ground floor. And what better way to accommodate shoppers than to install a musically fun access way?

Wawan Kopitiam @ Berjaya Times Square KL

Who else is capable of releasing mouth watering food reviews at an hour like this? It's none other than Rosalyn Tan of course!

Again, I had the previllege of following another blogger Stephanie Liah for a food review. This time, it's at Wawan Kopitiam in Berjaya Times Square, KL (1st Floor, located directly opposite to Watson's.)

Before the food could capture my attention, the interior design of the "kopitiam" did. By the way, "kopitiam" is a term used here in Malaysia which directly translates as "coffee shop" although it is widely known to be as a "food shop".

GSC Maxx @ Berjaya Times Square, KL

GSC Maxx opened on 25 November 2010, so it has been around for a little over a year now. Yet, it still stands proudly as the largest digital hall in Malaysia that spans 24 metres in screen size width, with a seating capacity of 555 seats (and 4 for the disabled)! Much much more than the usual seating in local cinemas.
